Use Cases

Content Creation

Teachers can make learning resources quickly and easily by recording directly in Moodle or dragging and dropping media files from the desktop. Regardless of the file format, Poodll quickly and reliably converts all media and display it to students. In language learning, Tiny Poodll enables teachers to create listening resources with the option of providing scaffolding in the form of target language subtitles. In general learning contexts, teachers can record/upload instruction or example videos for the students to follow when completing their assignments.

Peer Collaboration

Liven up forums by replacing written entries with audio and video recordings from the students. Language learners can practice speaking and pronunciation skills while providing listening content for their peers. Great for fully online courses.

Using Tiny Poodll

When either the microphone or video camera icons are pressed, the Poodll pop-up dialog will display.

There are four tabs:

  • Audio/Video recorder tab
  • Upload tab
  • Options tab
  • History tab

The recorder tab

The recorder displays the recorder. The recorder will different depending on the media type being recorder(audio or video) and the recorder skin (Standard, 123, Fresh etc). In all cases when the recording has been uploaded the dialog will close automatically and place the media player/ link in the html area.

The upload tab

The upload tab allows the user to upload a video/audio file from their computer or device, instead of recording. Its possible to press the "Choose File" button to navigate to the file from the file system. Or the file can simply be dragged and dropped into the dotted area. In either case the upload will start immediately and upon completion the dialog will close automatically and place the media player/ link into the html area.

The options tab

The options tab allows you to :

  • Specify if you want to embed a player or a media link into the html area
In either case when the page is displayed, Moodle will display a player.
A media link is needed to work with the Poodll filter and Video easy media filters. Moodle multimedia plugin filter can work links or media players.

  • Request subtitles and select the language being spoken. Available languages include: Arabic, English, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese.
Subtitles can be requested for audio and video recordings(or uploads). They take about 5 minutes to become available.
NB the subtitles must be requested (ie checkbox checked) BEFORE the recording/upload commences.

The History Tab

Previous recordings made by the current user using Tiny_Poodll are saved in their history tab. This allows them to re-use or re-cover recordings that they made previously.

Hi Justin, I just installed this plugin on Moodle 4.2.2+, with MariaDB 10.6.12, and PHP 8.0.30. The system then keeps showing that I have newer versions of plugins that need upgrading. It then shows me that it is the new Tiny Poodll plugin each time. Have any ideas of what to look for that might be causing this install looping activity?

I finally fixed it by going into the version file, changing the $plugin-> = 2023082100 so that it was $plugin-> = 2023082300, which then matched the $plugin->release = '1.0.2 (Build 2023082300)'; The install then completed correctly as before, but no longer was telling me that a new version was available for installation.

Thanks for the report Al. That is odd. Indeed the release and version details were out of sync. I guess that was the issue. I will bump the version and release numbers and publish a new version. Even though there are no real code changes, that should at least get everyone back in sync.
