The Aardvark project started in 2008 after a focus group with students led the development of our somewhat basic and neglected installation of Moodle into a (at the time) modern and engaging platform. The idea was to drive student use by creating a colourful, MySpace-inspired, student intranet as the front-end, with the functionality of a VLE behind it. Pressure from those students would then ultimately drive adoption by tutors.

Over the years, Aardvark has been an exciting and arguably inspiring project, started at Newbury College, but benefiting from the contributions and expertise of many other developers. It was the first open-source Moodle theme to include a drop-down navigation menu, a concept that would eventually become a core element of Moodle theme engine, and at its peak was installed on over 5,000 Moodle installations around the world.

Development of Aardvark slowed down a few years ago as many of its advantages were adopted as features in the core theme engine of Moodle and a lack of development time meant that I was no longer able to keep up with the changes required to make the theme compatible with the latest releases. Unfortunately I have had to make the decision to cease development of Aardvark to focus on other commitments.

Aardvark has been an incredible project to work on, and I have learnt a huge amount about PHP and CSS along the way and I would like to thank everyone who has contacted me over the years with their kind comments. Special thanks to Mary L Evans, Patrick Malley and all of the other contributors and supporters who have been part of this journey.

Shaun - The new version looks great; I've been a user for a while and appreciate all the work!
Is there a way to change the background color on the alert (theme_aardvark | generalalert) that I am missing or somewhere in the code I could edit? I think the 'snowalert' was taken out in a recent version and we'd like to tone the red alert color down a little.

    Hey Shaun,
I am running moodle 2.9 and the latest version of your amazing theme but there seems to be some problem with the ajax.
For example when i click on the "Add an activity or resource" link the box opens but nothing works as the browser tab becomes unresponsive. I have to refresh it again. The same problem happens when i click on "Add Question" button. It opens a box in translucent state and gets stuck there. The problem doesn't occurs when I switch to a different theme.
any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank You.

    Hi Shaun,

I also want to thank you for your contribution. Your theme is wonderful. We used it last year and we're still going with it this year with our 2.9 moodle version. But I have to confirm the same bug reported by Exam Pariksha in the previous message. When we click on the "Add an activity or resource" link the box opens but nothing works as the browser tab becomes unresponsive. I had to change the theme temporarily because teachers couldn't add neither resources nor activities since the last update. I tested it with Firefox and Chrome under Linux and when I switched to a different theme the problem disappears. In other words, I'm reporting the same issue of Exam Pariksha.

    Thank you Shaun

    Hey Toni,
A temporary fix for the "Add activity or resource" problem is to navigate to "Site Administration=>Appearance=>AJAX and Javascript page" and uncheck the "Activity chooser default" option. Now you would be able to add activities or resources without switching the theme. This is just a temporary fix that will disable ajax functionality for that area.

Sorry about this guys. That z-index "fix" turned out not to be much of a fix at all. It fixed one thing whilst breaking countless other things so it's been removed in the freshly uploaded 2.9.5

Hopefully there aren't too many other bugs.

    Hi all,

Is there a way i can add a center block to the frontpage. If that is not an option, is there a way i can make the 'site news' frontpage above the topic section?.

what i want to do is to add an image above the site news, but this is not possible as anything added will be on top it. This is why i was thinking of adding a block to the front page. I am using Moodle 2.8 with the awesome aardvark theme smile .. Thanks for your help,

Hi Shaun, can I ask you to add a slideshow (carousel etc.) option to the header? Your theme is my favourite one but the slideshow option is missing. I've tried to add Slideshow plugin, but your theme is to smart for it and it isn't display this blosk in proper place (for other themes, like academic it works, but not for Aardvark) so PLEASE add this feature.

    Thx in advance.

This is something I really want to add but don't have time at the moment. I have provided the source code on GIT HUB so if someone out there can add it, I will happily pull it in.

Hi Shaun, I've just noticed a little bug in upper navbar - when add many menu items and some of them are going to the next line, the navbar is grovin' (it's reasonable) but then it covers some of the page (ie. first block's title is covered by the navbar)... I reduced font size in navbar from 1.2em to 1.00em, but it's not a resoltion, because navbar is responsilbe and it's appaerance depends on the screen resolution.

    BTW thx for earlier answer.

Hi Shaun! Love your theme and the work that you've done to make it work with 2.9. Just wondering if it is possible to add font-awesome icons to custom html blocks so that they look similar to the premade blocks that you made look so great. I thought I remembered seeing something to this effect in the comments for this theme at some point but can't seem to find it. Also, would it be possible to add this as a feature in the next update so that icons could be added easily to any block without coding? Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks!

Hi Shaun, I think I might have found a bug with the navigation on mobile devices, if you have a drop-down that's more than two levels deep, tapping to expand the secondary level collapses the whole menu.

    Hi,
I'm getting this error everywhere in site administration->server also in site administration->Developement
that "a required parameter (sesskey) was missing " on the bottom of the page and also on the top I'm getting something like "[MAIN CONTENT GOES HERE - unhQF5sFss] "
Any idea why this is happening??
When I'm trying other themes I don't get any of these errors.
    Thanks.
