The Aardvark project started in 2008 after a focus group with students led the development of our somewhat basic and neglected installation of Moodle into a (at the time) modern and engaging platform. The idea was to drive student use by creating a colourful, MySpace-inspired, student intranet as the front-end, with the functionality of a VLE behind it. Pressure from those students would then ultimately drive adoption by tutors.

Over the years, Aardvark has been an exciting and arguably inspiring project, started at Newbury College, but benefiting from the contributions and expertise of many other developers. It was the first open-source Moodle theme to include a drop-down navigation menu, a concept that would eventually become a core element of Moodle theme engine, and at its peak was installed on over 5,000 Moodle installations around the world.

Development of Aardvark slowed down a few years ago as many of its advantages were adopted as features in the core theme engine of Moodle and a lack of development time meant that I was no longer able to keep up with the changes required to make the theme compatible with the latest releases. Unfortunately I have had to make the decision to cease development of Aardvark to focus on other commitments.

Aardvark has been an incredible project to work on, and I have learnt a huge amount about PHP and CSS along the way and I would like to thank everyone who has contacted me over the years with their kind comments. Special thanks to Mary L Evans, Patrick Malley and all of the other contributors and supporters who have been part of this journey.

I've added a workaround for the TinyMCE hyperlink issue in IE11 forcing it to go into IE10 mode. Appears to work at the moment but will keep an eye on it and remove the patch once IE11 starts playing nicely with Moodle/TinyMCE

Hi, I get this error in some cases (previewing a quiz question) and after update to latest version:
Fatal error: Class 'core_useragent' not found in /homez.744/mysite/www/theme/aardvark/layout/popup.php on line 33

    Any clue?
Thanks for the beautiful theme anyway.

Hi Sébastien, which browser are you using? I can't seem to replicate it in my site. The line that is causing the fault on your site is the part that looks to see if you're using a desktop or mobile device and then modifies the view depending on what it is. popup.php is an exact replica of the one in bootstrapbase so I'm not sure why it's playing up on yours.

    Hi,
I've tried firefox / chrome / chrome mobile / internet explorer 11. All give the same exact error.
To reproduce the error, this is what I do:
    - edit a quiz
    - when the list of questions appears, I pick any question and click on the magnifying glass icon, which is supposed to open a popup window with a preview of the question
    - the error message pops up in a new window
(I've already deleted the theme cache)

Strange, I've just done it on our copy and no problems. Which version of Moodle are you using?

Switching to another theme works. I've also tried to uninstall the theme and reinstall cleanly but it didn't change anything.

    Hi Shaun,

Can I ask for a feature request?

Can you add in a social icon for issuu.com and wikipedia.

    Cheers

    Shaun,
I am testing your theme on moodle 2.6.2. How would I get all blocks to be on the right side of the screen? With it being a bootstrap theme I am not sure if I can just go into the config.php and change things. Thanks.

When using the Gradebook and the setting in Site Admin > Grades > General Settings , Static Student Column , the gradebook has the students in the top by itself then the grades on the bottom, see
