How it works

Sticky Notes is an easy-to-use activity to build a post-it wall for your collaborative brainstorming, pedagogic uses, ranking, meeting, ideas organization...
Create, update and move sticky notes in different columns as a kanban, change background color and vote for sticky notes as you wish !

Features

When creating an activity, teacher can define which background colors will be used between the 6 default colors, and add a meaning/caption for each color if necessary. Teachers can edit any notes, while users updates only their own notes.

The vote function can be enabled in order to "like" some notes.

Teacher can also enable or define :
  • number of notes per user
  • number of votes per user if enabled
  • enable the rotate effect for notes for accessibility
  • view authors (only for teachers)
  • students see only their notes or all
  • students can move only their notes or all
  • lock notes and votes function
  • export all contents
During the activity, the student can:
  • create, update, delete and move his own notes
  • vote for notes if enabled
  • move his notes, or all if enabled
Activity completion based on notes creation is implemeted.

How to move notes

Yo can move notes in the same column or between columns in two ways :

  • you can use update interface,
  • you can also move notes using drag and drop. Click on a note and move it with your mouse to its new place. Drag and drop also works on smartphones or tablets.
Teacher can choose if students can move only their notes to limit modifications, or if they can move any notes in activity as a real collaborative activity.

Settings

In global settings, you can set 6 colors that will be used for sticky notes backgrounds, and give each color its own signification. Admin will set the 6 colors availables for all activities. Default colors are set in plugin global parameters, and have been chosen to respect accessibililty for colorblindness.

    Hi Oliver
Thanks a lot for such useful plugin. I faced to 2 issues:
    1. students can move other students sticky notes
    2. students can move teacher sticky notes
(although the move icon is not appear, but student role can move sticky notes of others among columns)

Is it possible to have a move permission for such issue as well as update or delete ot ... issue in permissions for this activity moulde?

    Hi,

Congratulations for the plugin. It is very useful and easy to use for students and teachers!

Are you planning to maintain the plugin for the next Moodle versions?

    Hi,
Dave, Moien, Eurecat : sorry for my very late response ! I will try to work on Sticky Notes in september. I will first study your demands, and I think it will be useful to check better if it works perfectly on next Moodle versions. I will try to maintain it as fast as possible, for I am working on another plugin in the same time.
    Stay tuned ! 微笑

    Hello Olivier,
We use Sticky Notes that works great.
But with the Adaptable theme, there is a confilct in CSS : the class .sticky is used by both your plugin and Adaptable theme. We change the occurences of CSS class sticky by stickynote : once in ./amd/src/dragndrop.js (line 37) for consistency, once in dragndrop.min.js, three times in styles.css (lines 4, 50 and 56) and twice in notes_list.mustache (lines 26 and 29). It seems to work. Maybe you could change this in future release 微笑.
    Thanks again for this plugin.

    Hi Serge !
I remember this bug a long time ago, when my university used Adaptable. I'm going to try to fix it thanks to your indications.
I installed StickyNotes and last Adaptable version on a local Moodle, but when I set Adaptable as default theme, I don't see exactly what this classname redundance produce. Would you mind explain me or send capture of class .sticky impact on presentation ?
    Thank you !

    Hi Moien Abadi !
I succeeded in taking time to finally solve this problem ! I am working on other bugs in the same time. Next update will contain all modifications so students can't move other students (and teacher !) notes.
In the same time, I'm trying to imagine a parameter if teacher wants everybodyu to move all notes... I'll see if it is easy to add.

    Hi Ueli,
thank you very much for your comment ! 微笑
I'm working right now on a completion system based on notes creation, if you are interested...
Feel free to give any other ideas to upgrade this plugin.

    Hi Olivier, excellent plugin!

We have just updated to 0.50 (2023121301) version of the plugin for Moodle 4.1.8 version and the Lock and Unlock buttons within the activity text displays in French.

    Cheers

Hi Olivier, thank you for great plugin.
Is there any possibility to set a kind of template with predefined notes to be used by students but with that difference that it is not changed to anyone else but the student?
Now, if I set off the "Students see all notes allover activity" students can create their own notes but can not see the predefined notes by teacher.

Nice feature would be to lock the notes one by one and allow button to make a copy by student.

And the last thing I would suggest to set columns and plugin background color or even better to place an image.

    Hi Adam,
thank you for your message and all your propositions !

    - As Sticky Notes now works, I don't think that a template feature will be easy to add... but I'll think about this, this can be interesting ! To be sure : you suggest that teacher can create some notes that every student will found in his own board as templates, and that every student can use these notes without making them disappear from other students board ?
    - About "Students see all notes...", is it a bug you're talking about ?
    - About locking notes one by one : very interesting ! How do you see this ? Is it a feature reserved to teacher ? Or a "security" for students when they are working ?
    - About backgrounds : I'm not very sure to implement this, for I think this could cause readability and accessibility issues...

    Best regards,
    Olivier

Hi Oliver, sorry for late answer.
This is the case: Students come to course, they learn something and they have two columns to sort the predefined notes (by teacher) and add some of their own (these notes could be set by student to be public or not, public notes could enabled or disabled by teacher in settings). Teachers notes can not be edited by student but can be moved to any column accordingly students decision but only for him alone. All students can set their own notes. Teacher checks their decision. The result for teacher is a list of notes for each student.
I know it is not so easily done ;) Thank you again for your work.

    - About "Students see all notes..." - i don't think it is a bug (If you work on cooperative task it is great as it is), but would be great if I as a teacher could create some notes, students could move it but only for themselfs not for all students.

    - About "locking notes one by one" - I see it as a feature for both, teacher and student. Teacher creates notes, lock them for student. Student can see them and can create his own notes and lock them for others. Others can vote for his note and placement.

    - About background - Sure ti needs more research on this. I managed it changing using CSS - thank you for naming the columns ;)

If you wish i can send you a picture how it looks css hacked 微笑 .

Maybe in a big picture, as I see it, there could be one setting at start. Some kind of mode.

    - Cooperative mode (free mode): It can work like you have it now. So anyone can move, anyone cad add, remove etc. But still, locking one by one would be great even in this mode. Voting could be enabled also for locked notes.

    - Competitive mode (fun mode): Students and Teacher can see and use whole board (except notes, columns locked by teacher). The Students places notes (each student has its own color) for their own decisions, they can add new notes but not move notes of others. Students can create copy of notes of others (maybe by moving it, or copy button). Other students can vote for notes of others where these votes are taken as they would create their own note with same text. Teacher can grade it, or not (also with using smilies). Teacher can send some feedback to students with notes with same text.

    - Personal mode: It can stay as it is with a possibility for teacher to create notes locked for student. No changes done by student would be visible to other students, only visible to teacher.

I hope I did not make your head heavy :D

    Hi Adam,
wow, that makes a lot for my brain ! :D
All these features are very interesting, but that would be a work for a whole new version I think... Sticky Notes wasn't thought in a way to integrate modes, But it would be a great idea ! I keep it in mind for the future.
Thank you very much for your message !
