Mootimeter is a tool that allows you to create interactive presentations. It offers a variety of features such as word clouds, polls and quizzes. Mootimeter only uses moodle-internal functionalities and does not rely on external services. Mootimeter is a classic activity that you can add via the activity chooser to get live and instant feedback from your students. Mootimeter is a great way to make your presentations more interactive and engaging. You can customise your presentations with various features to engage classes and courses. Here are some of the features that Mootimeter offers:

  • Word clouds: create a word cloud to get feedback from your class. You can collect the answers to a question and then display them in a word cloud.
  • Polls: Create a survey to get feedback from your class. You can ask different types of questions.
  • Quiz questions: Create quiz questions to test the knowledge of your audience.

Mootimeter deliberately does not want to compete with commercial providers. Instead, it aims to provide a low-level entry point so that core functionalities can be quickly and easily integrated into lessons. This is why there are also some didactic functions, such as limiting the answer options, an anonymous mode, a full-screen mode and the option to hide the answers from the students.

In all of this, Mootimeter relies on dynamic page loading so that no page refresh is usually necessary for students (or teachers) to see changes and updates.

Mootimeter has a subplugin structure and can therefore be easily extended with additional question types. Ideas and contributions are welcome. The discussion takes place here: https://github.com/mebis-lp/mod_mootimeter/issues

I completed the instalation of the plugin, all the checks went ok, I've created the activity, but when i try to view as a student i only get this message: "Recently there are no questions to answer". I'm missing some part of the configuration? Thanks in advance. (Moodle version 4.4.1)

Hi, after creating the activity, did you also create a page (so for example a "Quiz" or a "Wordcloud")? And did you set the page visible? IIRC as a default the newly created page is being hidden at first, so the teacher has time to prepare it. After this it has to be set to "visible".

Hi, yes. I've created all the pages, a quiz, wordcloud and also a poll. The activity is available to participants but users cannot see anything, (I also reviewed all the steps but there is nothing in particular that allows students to see the activity). The page has been also debug up but there is no warning about it in the console. Any clues?

It's not the visibility of the activity, but inside the activity the visbility of the page: Are the page icons on the left dashed through? If yes, click the page and click on the eye icon. If this doesn't work I suggest to create a moodle forum post and add some screenshots there and post a link to the thread here.

Hi Philipp, thank you very much for your response and explanation. I notice that the option to publish the pages is only available when the page is selected and this may lead to some user misunderstood. Now i have visibility of the contents! Congrats the plugin looks great!

hello, do you have to be logged into the moodle course to take part in polls as a student?

Hi, yes you have to be enrolled in the course that contains the activity. But it's possible to combine it with something like a self enrolment method and an easy enrol key or even an auto enrol method (there's a plugin for this).

Hi Peter, great plugin that works well for us. Two things however. 1. We get an error when we want to work with regular Scales in Moodle. Debugging says "Field "grade" does not exist in table "mootimeter" (line 136 line 380). 2. We maybe use answer that are too long? When viewing the results the text does not fit and does not display very well. Thanks for helping out!

Hi Peter, first issue is probably being caused by a very early development version of mootimeter. Do you have the latest version of mootimeter installed?

Could you maybe please raise an issue on https://github.com/mebis-lp/moodle-mod_mootimeter/issues for both your errors and provide screenshots with the additional error messages / the view of the bad styling? TIA!

Hi Philipp, I updated the plugin and now I do not have any errors on Scales anymore, thanks for pointing that out. For the styling I will gather screenshots and raise an issue on Github. Thanks for your prompt reply!

It is a great activity to use in a course. It's really perfect but the only i wanna mention here is about the question hide-unhide thing. If you hover your arrow towards the eye icon (with a slash) then it should mean that the question is hidden but is shows that to hide the activity you need to click on it and the vice-versa is written for the eye icon (without slash). It needs to be written other way around for both.

Hi. We are currently running Moodle 4.1.9. Would this plugin be compatible with earlier versions?

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we will not be able to support older LTS releases. Current LTS is Moodle 4.5, so please figure out, if you can update your instance.
