The Card Box activity can help your students memorize vocabulary, technical terms, formulas and definitions. In order to support its students in independently repeating extensive learning content, RWTH Aachen University would like to offer a digital flashcard system. This is to be developed as a plug-in for Moodle, which the university has been using since March 2019 as a teaching and learning platform.

Since in university large amounts of material are taught in a short time and should be available in the long term, effective and time-efficient learning strategies are needed. Card index boxes or flashcards represent such a strategy.

The digital version extends both the learning possibilities and the user-friendliness of a normal flashcards. Images and other multimedia content can be integrated, and once created, cards can be made available to many users. In addition, a digital flashcard can be easily transported and used at any time, for example on train journeys or in the waiting room.

In case of typing in your answer during practise, you wont be able to use any kind of formatting. However if you wish to type something like e^x where x is the exponent. you need to type just ex and it will be evaluated as correct

Thank you very much for your plugin. Could you please explain if it is based on a spaced repetition algorithm? Also, I installed it but haven't found out how teachers can view the statistics for a specific student. Is that feature available? Thank you.

Yes the plugin is based on spaced repetitions algorithm ( you can find a detailed documentation on the plugin at: https://help.itc.rwth-aachen.de/en/service/8d9eb2f36eea4fcaa9abd0e1ca008b22/article/2e75cf7d4d3245d6bdfc8c04e00e8455/). No teachers cannot view statistics for specific student's statistics since we have developed this keeping Dataprivacy and security laws in mind

Thank you for your prompt reply. It's great that it's based on spaced repetition algorithm. Regarding data privacy, by "statistics for specific students", I meant the usual report on students' progress that teachers at brick-and-mortar schools often have access to, including, in the case of Cardbox, the percentage of answers they got correct for each attempt and the proportion of cards in different decks. This is all to help teachers help their students. Is this kind of information accessible to teachers? Thank you very much again.

At the moment we offer 3 types of statistics regarding students' progress. 1) Absolute number of cards per deck for all students 2) Number of cards per session and 3) Session duration (Minimum, Maximum, Average). You can find these under 'Progress' tab
Additionally an attempt/practice session is completed when student either gets all cards correct or when he/she chooses manually to end practice by click the 'End Practice'. So it is difficult to check the percentage of answers they got correct for each attempt. However teachers can estimate which cards are students struggling with by comparing the deck each card belongs to in the Overview tab. Cards that students have given wrong answers to atleast once while practising, will have lower deck numnber as compared to the cards they have got correct always

Hello; I'm very interested in getting the card box version. Is there an option in which the student indicates if the question is Easy, ask in x minutes or is the question difficult??? I mean, if you have studied the Anki application, does this plug in have those options? If you don't have them, you could have great success with these new versions.

I have installed latest version of cardbox (1.05) . The problem is that when I "start practice" there is no area to type in the words. (I am using moodle 4.01- that is the max. version I can use at the moment because I am on a shared server). Please advise...
