What is the goal of this plugin?

The Course Template Wizard is a local Moodle plugin that makes it easy and efficient to apply predefined course templates to existing courses. Templates themselves are regular Moodle courses that are maintained in a dedicated course category.

The goal of the Course Template Wizard is to simplify and standardize course creation and updates. Instead of building courses from scratch or copying content manually, existing courses can be aligned with a defined template in a controlled and repeatable way. This helps to reduce manual effort for teachers and administrators.

How is it set up?

In the plugin settings, a course category is defined that contains all courses used as templates. A service user is also configured, which is created automatically during plugin installation and is responsible for executing the overwrite process in the background.

Additionally, template target exceptions can be defined by course ID to prevent specific courses from being overwritten by the wizard.

How does it work in practice?

Course templates are created and maintained as regular Moodle courses within a dedicated template category. When needed, managers and teachers can apply a selected template to an existing course, replacing its content with the content of the template.

During this process, important course-specific elements such as custom fields, roles, enrolments, groups and groupings are preserved. Any available template from the configured template category can be selected, making it easy to reuse established course structures across the platform. When applying a template, a new course summary and course image can be added to complement the template content.
