Automatic LLM-based tagging of file resources stored in a Moodle course.

AutoTag 0.2.0

Moodle 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.5, 5.0, 5.1
Released: Monday, 22 September 2025, 3:58 AM

AutoTag

The AutoTag plugin enables teachers to get a list of suggested tags for resources. The corresponding files are passed through an LLM such as GPT to identify possible tags. This helps teachers to tag resources more quickly, which can be beneficial for them as well as their students (e.g., for using the official Tags block).

An OpenAI API key is required to use this plugin. Site administrators can set the key in the settings page of the plugin.

Installing via uploaded ZIP file

  1. Log in to your Moodle site as an admin and go to Site administration > Plugins > Install plugins.
  2. Upload the ZIP file with the plugin code. You should only be prompted to add extra details if your plugin type is not automatically detected.
  3. Check the plugin validation report and finish the installation.

Installing manually

The plugin can be also installed by putting the contents of this directory to

{your/moodle/dirroot}/local/autotag

Afterwards, log in to your Moodle site as an admin and go to Site administration > Notifications to complete the installation.

Alternatively, you can run

$ php admin/cli/upgrade.php

to complete the installation from the command line.
