A modular and visual course format. Hides all topics and creates a grid of icons (one for each topic) with short titles. Clicking on an icon brings up the content from the corresponding topic in a "lightbox" style display.

Support:

The format comes with NO support.  Please see the 'Support' section in 'Readme.md' file that comes with the format.  This is because the format is complex and I regret that I don't have the time / resources to freely assist with questions pertaining to specific enhancements / changes / knowledge improvement.

I will investigate genuine bugs and issue fixes in a timescale set by myself.  When reporting issues you MUST clearly state the full version and release of both Moodle and the Grid format format as contained within their 'version.php' files - if not it takes me longer to figure out, often resulting in me asking for the details anyway and slowing the process of solving your problem down.  It really helps to upload and describe in detail the issue you are having on the 'Course formats' forum.

More to follow as new icons have been added....

Privacy API support starts with V3.3.0.5 for M3.3 and V3.4.0.4 for M3.4 where the API has been implemented in the minor release of Moodle.

It's very nice. I installed on moodle2.2.1. All works fine but in ie9 when editing opened, page style will be in a muddle . Are there somebody meet the problem?

doesn't appear to want to install on moodle 2.3. the screen hangs without showing 'success' after confirming to upgrade the moodle database.

Anybody knows what is going to happen with this format? Everybody at work is eager to use it but it breaks my backup and restore processes so I'm not really ready to put it into production ...

I'll second Ilywelyn Morgan's comment - I cannot get this to install on Moodle 2.3. To test it, I tried it on a Moodle 2.2 server and no probs. Please let us know the best way to get a fix in the works. smile

Have created a Jira http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-3769 related to issues with grid view not installing properly on 2.3

This plugin looks interesting and we're going to pilot it on our Moodle. I do, however, have one criticism.

You'll need to look at your CSS selectors. Using !important tags is usually a bad idea, because it pretty much overrides everything and makes it impossible to style around with CSS. I found your transparent background and dotted underline styles were affecting every other course format on my Moodle, so I removed them.

It's probably worth adding a custom CSS class higher up the page (e.g. class="course-grid") and using that to apply your styles.

Apart from that, thanks for sharing this engaging course format. We hope to make great use of it.

    Hello Julian,
I tried to use it before in Moodle 2.2 and it stopped import/export/restore from working.
I have read the version for Moodle 2.2 is still a release candidate (I understand that it is not stable) and therefore, not stable enough for production sites.
When would it be a stable version for Moodle 2.2?

    Thank you very much

I concur with the enthusiasm for this plug-in. Worked well right out of the box in 2.2. I have one comment that could make it more useful.

When you finish an activity in a topic, you are returned to the lightbox grid. More logically you would be returned to the topic overlay.

Anyone else find this comment useful?

When can we hope for a 2.3 version (non-beta)?

    Dear Mark,

I cannot speak for Julian, but it is all a matter of time and testing. Moodle 2.3 had quite a few changes that specifically impacted topic based formats. Development can be tracked on http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-3769. To be honest what would help to get the code out of 'beta' is testing and possibly 'funding' - because I'm not paid, I develop the code whenever I can and then push the changes to Julian on https://github.com/PukunuiAustralia/moodle-courseformat_grid which contains a more recent beta code version to test than is currently published here. And indeed because testing takes time any help to identify faults (and possibly suggest a fix) by others is always welcomed.

    I hope this helps, cheers,

    Gareth

Please fix backup/restore issue in 2.2. Restore of ANY course, even not using this format fails.

I removed the folder course/format/grid/backup to make the site work correctly.

Attempted to update from 2.2 to 2.3 . Followed directions in readme.txt and dropped the 'format_grid_icon' and 'format_grid_summary' tables. However, when went to install states that 'format_grid_summary' table doesn't exist. Checked the 'config_plugins' table and saw no instance of 'format_grid' in that table. What now?

    Dear Alan,

The instructions state 'If you have previously installed a Beta version' i.e. a beta version of the format for Moodle 2.3. Otherwise the update code will run for 2.2 to 2.3. However, I realise that it does not help you. I'm not sure why there is no 'format_grid' entry for the 'plugins' attribute as a row in the table. I release that it is a large table and may require a second look as I cannot see why it does not exist. Please could you kindly check again as it could be any of the 800 odd rows.

    Regards,

    Gareth

    Dear Alan,

Also, have you gone to 'Site Administration' -> 'Notifications' to upgrade?

    Cheers,

    Gareth
