This plugin works by associating a course section with a sidebar block instance. This is done by mirroring the contents of an “orphaned” section. Here’s an example:
- Let’s assume that a course has 10 sections
- When you create a Sidebar block, this block will automatically be associated with section 11, which is hidden (orphaned)
- You can now add resources and activities directory to this Sidebar block. Note that these objects will actually get created in section 11, but they are also shown in the Sidebar block. Any changed made in the Sidebar block will be applied to section 11, and vice-versa.
You can create multiple Sidebar blocks. Each instance will be associated with a different orphaned section. You can also manually select the orphaned section, if needed.
All resources and activities within a block can be edited and moved around just like normal activities when editing is turned on. Adding label resources allows you to add text to the blocks as well.
In a sense, this block combines the main menu block functions and HTML block functions into a single block that can be used in a course

Firstly, many thanks for sharing this plugin with the Moodle community. And
especially for having the 2.7 version of it ready by now. It's nice to see a
mature, well written and maintained plugin here. I am going to approve it now,
with some suggestions for formal improvements.
Please provide a documentation URL. In your case, I would say that
https://github.com/jfilip/moodle-block_side_bar/blob/master/README.md might
serve well for now, unless your realize you need to extend it (to use our docs
or github wiki, for example).
Please consider adding a screenshot of your plugin to help folks get an idea
of what it looks like when installed. It would really help in this particular
case.
I can see "cm_info::get_url() is deprecated, please use the property
cm_info->url instead." in 2.7 which I'm sure you are aware of.
WRT the plugin name, what about changing it in the 'en' package to 'Side bar'.
In Moodle, we do not capitalise titles and such change could be done in the
en_us pack for the block. Also note, plugins are supposed to contain just the
'en' language pack. All other translations should be processed exclusively via
AMOS.

thanks for continuing the development of this block! However, I'm a bit confused. Previous versions of the plugin were called block_side_bar (and that's what the title of this page still says). However, it seems that in the code, the plugin has now been renamed to block_ned_sidebar. Is the new version compatible with (or rather upgradeable from) previous versions? I guess if I just install the new version on a system that had an old block_side_bar before, then my existing block instances will be lost, is that correct?
