I split this off from the main discussion so it could get more views. Can others please have a look at this and provide input on what's going on. It's as if, the database module is somehow ignoring the YUI menu CSS and javascript.

My guess is that something did not upload to your server correctly. Does the menu appear correctly on my demo?

1.) These are the standard icons that come from the core (/moodle/pix/).

2.) The menu styles are set in styles_yui_menu.css and are commented where appropriate.
