8 hours per course?  Teachers are going to do more than complain!!  This question bank change has me very wary of upgrading...

I would normally start by manually deleting localcache and cache folders from moodledata folder.  Then see what happens.  If all the images disappear at that point, you probably need to run replace tool to update the database with the new url (did it change?).  If this is just boost_union images, that seems strange..not sure why they would be affected and nothing else unless there is a permissions issue on the boost_union folder maybe?

I would be interested to see if they will come back and comment on this - I could be wrong but I know I was working on a host that did not have something that Moodle required and they went ahead and installed with softac...it was a while back but in my mind, that is the main purpose of the installer - to make sure it can install on the environment and that is why we see so many issues with it.
