OK - have you already made these assignments? Because if you haven't then why not make them as a quiz instead? Two questions: (1) true/false "I have submitted this work" and (2) essay type where they are allowed to upload work.

For question (1) give this question AND THE QUIZ whatever number of credits you want - eg 2, or 5

For question (2) don't give it a grade. You said grading of the work didn't matter anyway.

 Then as long as they answer "true" to I have submitted this work they will get the required number of credits for that item and you can then do any further grade calculations to get their totals.

But if you are using Moodle assignments I dont know how to automatically give them a grade.

You mean you want Moodle to grade the assignments automatically for you?  Sorry - I  don't understand the bit about I'm trying to automate as much of the tracking as possible so I know, even if they're not yet graded, when a student has submitted all of the requirements or has some left to complete. Are you saying that they get credit for submitting an assignment even if they don't get a good grade in it?

Depuis Moodle 2.3 il est possible de créer des alias/des raccourcis  - donc par exemple un enseignant peut ajouter un fichier à ses fichiers personnels - il  peut ensuite l'afficher comme 'alias" dans plusieurs endroits -cela veut dire que s'il veut changer le document, il n'a qu'à le changer dans ses fichiers personnels et ses étudiants verront la modification partout où le fichier est affiché. Une 2nde vidéo - regarder à partir de 3 minutes 30 ...

La communauté enseignante a donc été résistante par rapport à l'abandon ou futur abandon des fichiers du cours ...

Certains oui, mais  on s'y habitue de plus en plus et  l'abandon des fichiers du cours est effectivement, comme on dit en anglais un "fait accompli" 

Pour ceux qui se plaignent de cette nouvelle gestion des fichiers, je suggère dans la première vidéo quelques workarounds - utiliser les fichiers personnels -  on peut y organiser ses documents dans des dossiers comme chez Windows.. ou créer un dossier caché pour les enseignants qui partagent un cours.

Bonjour ! Où commencer? Il y a 3 ans (donc, il  y a longtemps dans la vie de Moodle) j'ai fait une vidéo sur les fichiers du cours dans Moodle 2 - certains aspects ont changé  mais elle vous aidera un peu à  expliquer à vos enseignants "où sont les fichiers du cours?"

I'm not so sure about metadata but you can make them a course where they all have teacher access. They can drag and drop into the course and then when they are in their own courses they can go to Server files and bring in to their courses the files they want.
