'I can't run a business like this': Why the WordPress row matters

BBC Technology 26 October 2024

WordPress.org makes its source code open, which mean anyone can use it to create and redistribute their own tools for free.

That's what WP Engine does to run a web hosting service.

But in return for the source code, WordPress expects those who use it to contribute to its maintenance, for example by fixing bugs and testing new features.

The boss of WordPress accuses WP Engine of failing to do so, going so far as to call it "a cancer to WordPress."

Those ways of accomplishing education control reminded me of an ancient poem (not really a poem, they are called වැල් වටාරම්, literally "entangled creepers"):

අල්ලට සිඟාවත් රස නැති කැවිලි කකා
වල් කොළ බිම අතුට නිදි නොලැබ දුක් තකා
කල් ගිය රෙදි වැරලි ඇඳ දැලි කුණෙන් වකා
ඇල්මෙන් අකුරු උගනිවු ඉදිරි වැඩ තකා

Roughly translate to, "Eat begged food, sleep on mats of forest leaves,.. learn letters with love for the future".

That "creeper" is very ancient. With all the revolutions in between, from the industrial revolution to the world wide web, it should belong to the past - so I thought.

May be the difficulty in 4) is, if you want en_ca and fr_ca, you must have en and fr. If you don't want have to offer them as choices, you can control it through the "Languages on language menu" (langlist) setting.

Hi AL

I'm aware that if one takes the thick book on computer-marked quizzes out, it'll have a couple of dozens strategies (with meanings), half of them are implemented in Moodle. I was wondering how Vickey's strategy goes, how could one mix grades and time, and was just asking how.

Here is a simple formula:
Corrected mark y = x * (1 + log(T/t))

So the multiplication factor will go like:

    t/T | 1 + log(T/t)
    ------------------
    1.0 | 1.00
    0.5 | 1.30
    0.2 | 1.70
    0.1 | 2.00
So, done in half-time gets 30% bonus, in one fifth of time 70%, in one tenth of time gets 100% bonus!
