How can I embed I a pdf file for display only and disable download option of it?
Right now I am able to embed my pdf file from a Google Drive using iframe tag, but shows the option to download the file.

Hi Sudhir,

Were you able to find a solution to this problem?

Please use the search forums feature before posting a question like this. It's virtually impossible to prevent your participants from downloading the materials used for instruction / class / practice... If it can't be downloaded, it can be copied-pasted, if it can't be copied-pasted, why have it online in the first place? There is a plugin for Moodle that may offer a solution for the challenge: https://moodle.org/plugins/mod_securepdf

A more philosophical question regarding these challenges: What knowledge/skill/experience is so privileged, you don't want your course participants to ever share it with others?

I think sometimes there is a question of intellectual property involved

In some classes, we may use content from principals which we are authorised to use as part of the conduct of the lesson, but not allowed to distribute to others

Disabling the download feature of embedded files would allow us to do this very nicely

Hello Lionel,

This is a workaround and probably not what you want to do, but..

I've found that by creating a Quiz, adding a description type question with the pages of the PDF as images, setting the quiz to have Full screen pop-up with some JavaScript security for the Browser Security setting (under Extra restrictions on attempts) and setting the total grade for all questions to 0, you can show the PDF's content and make it impossible to copy or download it. The annoying part is converting the PDF pages as images and adding them manually in a description question.

That said, it's good to remember that it's always possible to make a screen capture, copy it within an OCR software or a PNG/JPEG to PDF converter.

There may be better ways to accomplish this, but it's one way. I do hope you find a better way and I'm curious to know. If you do find how, please share! smile

Cheers,

Those ways of accomplishing education control reminded me of an ancient poem (not really a poem, they are called වැල් වටාරම්, literally "entangled creepers"):

අල්ලට සිඟාවත් රස නැති කැවිලි කකා
වල් කොළ බිම අතුට නිදි නොලැබ දුක් තකා
කල් ගිය රෙදි වැරලි ඇඳ දැලි කුණෙන් වකා
ඇල්මෙන් අකුරු උගනිවු ඉදිරි වැඩ තකා

Roughly translate to, "Eat begged food, sleep on mats of forest leaves,.. learn letters with love for the future".

That "creeper" is very ancient. With all the revolutions in between, from the industrial revolution to the world wide web, it should belong to the past - so I thought.
