I could have used the scripts you mention, say three months ago. The local Moodle admin had enough of the up-and-down and decided to go his own way, a journey with lot of foot work. He is going through question categories one-by-one and exports the useful/unique ones in to Moodle XML in the hope of building the new version from scratch during the summer break.

Still, I would like to have a look to understand from the SQL-side, if you don't mind attaching a zip file here in the forum or checking in to GitHub or a similar site.

That said, digital fingerprinting of any visitor is creepy.

The new information that the course runs for isolated groups that keep on arriving and overlapping with the earlier groups brings another level of complexity. I never faced that challenge, therefore can't comment. Hope others will jump in here.

The error message you posted clearly shows that the cause is not an incompatible MySQL running rather no MySQL is running! The MySQL upgrade (at the system level) did not complete successfully.

I interpret the silence as there is nothing new, the status quo continues, i.e. people can continue tracking a branch, means progress along the weeklies, or clone a tag, means the code is frozen - until the users asks for another tag. The only issue is that the helpers have to keep on explaining the two since Moodle Docs up to 5.0 describes one and from 5.1 the other.
