Hi there,

I know many people prefer TinyMce to HTMLArea as a a text editor, but as a language teacher I prefer HTMLArea because it works with Firefox dictionaries (i.e. spell checkers).

I know there is a workaround (using 'Paste from Word") but that's not easy to explain to distance students.

How do other language teachers manage?

Cheers,

Glenys

Hi there,

This is a discussion that has been had many times on these forums and, I hope, will be had many, many more times because I feel it's really important. I also think that Tim is right that it's a cultural problem, but wrong that teachers can't change it: though not by what we say, but by the way we act.

Tim, Itamar and Marcus, I've learnt a lot of technical stuff from you on these forums but if I admire you so much, it's not principally because of the content but because of the way you write: polite, honest, sometimes a little sharp, sometimes humorous, always respectful of the questioner. I think it's a teacher's way of being that impacts their students more than the subject itself. No, I don't think we can change the world overnight, but slowly, slowly...

Cheers,

Glenys

PS: There are several others I admire just as much as the 3 above but they haven't contributed to this discussion..: yet. wink

Hi Itamar,

I'd love to read examples of your exam questions.

I'll suggest a couple that I think it would be impossible to "cheat" on:

  1. What is the circumference of Australia? (1 point is given for every reasoned and rational answer, 10 points for any answer not given by another student.)
  2. A square, a triangle, a circle. Which best represents the life and personality of (you yourself, the President, Shakespeare...). Present at least 3 events in support of your thesis.*

The examinees have unlimited access to the Internet, books and any other resources they wish - including talking to each other.

Maybe I'm wrong - I haven't tested these in a real exam. How would you cheat?

Cheers,

Glenys

*Thanks to my colleague Caren Lumley for this one.

Hi Jim,

You need to make the changes in the Hot Potatoes source files and save them as an alternative when you make your JMix exo before you upload it to Moodle & QuizPort. The change you need to make is in the djmix.ht_ file. As you've already realised, you need to change "var DropTotal = 3" to "var DropTotal = 1" You may need to make some other changes to give your images enough space.

Have you seen the tutorial: How to edit the source files ?

Cheers,

Glenys
