For responses to be saved the user has to move to another page in the quiz.

A quiz that is not submitted is categorized as open.

When the quiz closes it is not automatically submitted.

Regrading does not change that.Open quizzes are not graded or regraded.

A probable scenario (despite what the student says) is that the student opened the quiz, looked at the first page, perhaps entered a response or two and then navigated out of the quiz or closed the browser. So the quiz was not submitted, and no responses where saved.

Tim, just a thought, a possible way to resolve the problem of not being able to grade a quiz that inadvertently was not submitted, is to force submission on quiz close but allow the student a time frame to revert the submission. The student remains responsible for the submission and still has the option to not submit, but this responsibility is shifted to the other side of the submission. smile

True, but I'm currently part of the public which lacks interest. My comment above was not intended as a complaint, although admittedly its opening remark might be understood as such. I set up quizzes to show attempts score and if I must hide I disable the activity report. smile

It depends who you ask. wink

I reported it as a bug in 1.9 a thousand years ago (see MDL-22197). It was closed without fix three weeks ago due to lack of public interest. I suppose not too many instructors are aware of this integrity breach.

If you're using version 2.1 and above you are welcome to open/reopen  the issue. smile
