I just noticed a reference to .dll files. That's a Windows thing, not Ubuntu. Did you uncomment...

extension=php_mysqli.dll

...in php.ini (or one of the files that php.ini includes)? Don't do that, if you did.

Just to be clear.... this is *intermittent*? Moodle mostly works?

How often? Any clues at all about when it happens? Intermittent faults are notoriously tricky to track down.
