Albert, I haven't tested it myself, but DFS-R is correct way to synchronize, on clustering (farming) scenario, you can either go with NLB or ARR, both are available in IIS where ARR gives more control over how to distribute the users overs servers. So I assume, for data-root you can always assign a single server.

and as for Lynda's course on Moodle, that as far as I know, was developed by Mary Cooch from Moodle head quarters, as you'll see her many replies around this forum.
you can ask her as well, she may have some affiliate link that may give you discount as well.
looks like you've been playing with permissions on the server and allocated wrong permissions to wrong folder as I can see your root directory listings, means you haven't still secured your root directory to be displayed.
Have a look into your htaccess file and see whats there.
