Problems export, import, restore

We have had a lot of problems exporting and importing questions. (Moodle 1.8 + (2007021505))

None of the available formats seems to work correctly for us (we have a lot of open questions that seem not to be supported). the option Moodle XML and Moodle XHTML also give us problems with our .

We have tried another way. Restore a course with the questions, that is also not working.

I am trying to restore a Moodle course from one server to another with exactly the same version (Moodle 1.8 + (2007021505)).

The course only includes questions of several types organized in categories and some quizzes.

The restore process stops without any reason and no message after the creation of 'Default' category.

I have the similar problem:
I am trying to restore a course (150 Mb) from localhost Moodle v.1.8.4+ to host service (freehostia.com to be exact) Moodle v.1.8.1. and have failed to transfer course.zip file.
Where to read detailed instructions how to do backup (both course and site) properly?
Thanks

The most reliable way of round-tripping questions (that is, exporting, then re-importing to the same site or elsewhere) is Moodle XML format.

Please be specific about the problems you are having. Can you attach on of your export files that will not import? Can you copy and paste the exact error message you are seeing? Thanks.

Tim,

I have to partially rectify.
  1. The import/export mechanism works ok, a little misunderstanding happened. (When importing we didn't choose the same importing type. I would have expected that information to be included in the file).

  2. When you try to restore de backup it doesn't work. I attach a backup of a course.

In the course we are using our WIRIS Math Plugin to create content.

Me to have problems to save some of my courses and to restore them. When I start the backup everything seems to work ok. But then in reality the copy isn't complete. And even if it is complete, so even if the message appears: "copy completed successfully", and I try to restore the course, the restore never comes to an end. The restore process stops without any reason and no message after the creation of 'Default' category.

If I go to the list of courses the copy of the course that I tried to restore appears in the list , but when I enter it there are only the icons referring to the typology of activities (for example of a hotpot execrcise) but the quizes  in reality don't exist and the categories are empty (I can't even see the titles of the quizes, or the questions).

I use the last 1.9 stable version of moodle.

Has it something to do with the dimension of the course? What else can it be?

Paola

In 1.9 we changed the import type to radio buttons - you *have* to choose one. This was always an irritation (forgetting to choose the type)

Having the type encoded in the file is not practical when most of the formats are in fact from programs other than Moodle.

Hi Howard,

I sent you the message I get if I try to save or import one of my german-courses, even if I chose only some of the activities (quizes, hotpot, forum ecc.) and don't include files and logs. But I don't understand what it meens, for me it's like reading chinese. The problem is that every year I need to copy one course mantainig some activities like in the previous year but modifying and including others. But the old course has to remain the same because students of past years can continue their activities on it. If I can't copy, restore or import I have to re-create the course from the begginning every year.

Here is the message:

Hi,

Was that really the end of the page? Those warnings are common and not usually something to worry about.

This is actually a backup and restore problem - it's not my area of expertise I'm sorry.

The one thing I would suggest is - have you tried backing up the quiz without the quiz attempts? I've had problems myself with this, more than a 100 or so quiz attempts and it really starts to burn up memory.

The big problem with backup and restore is its use of resources. It is essential that you have 'php memory limit' and the 'maximum execution time' set high enough. These are in the php.ini file. For a large course you could need to go up to the regions of 512MB or even more.

There's some info about the php settings here...

Re: Problems export, import, restore

Yesterday I tried to export course questions: 1162 MultipleChoice, ~150 nestled (4 to 5 levels) categories, by Moodle XMl option a few times on my Windows localhost (v.1.8.4+) and failed to do that. The process stoped somewhere in the middle and did not complete at all. Then I did export by 6 categories by 70 to 300 questions and was able to complete the processes succesfully. I have not checked yet export results (did not restore exported files to a new course question bank). Are there some limitations for exporting in terms of question/categories number?

you probably ran out of memory or time. Make sue your php.ini limits are set high enough.

Hi!

It's me again, there's really no way to save and restore my courses. Also the import function doesn't function, not always. Sometimes it looks as if the import is blocked in the middle, so without any success-message. Then when I enter again the course I find the imported files. I tried everything I can think of: I excluded users, logs, files, some of the exercises (for example tried to save and restore only quizzes, than only hotpot-files), nothing helped. I have moodle  1.9. The copy always ends with some "....." in the middle, as I have shown some times ago in a previous message. Can somebody help me?

Paola,

Can I just check.... are we talking about import/export of quiz questions or backup and restore? Your last post was about backup and restore. You are probably best reporting backup and restore problems in the Backup forum - or at least a different bunch of people may see it.

What you should certainly do is to turn on debugging (Site Admin=>Server=>Debugging, turn on show errors and turn debugging level up to full). There may well be an error that you are not seeing. Knowing the error would help a lot.
