This method has worked just fine for me. Hope it helps those in need.

How do I export questions from Respondus for use with Moodle? Two things must occur to be able to export questions from Respondus 3.5 for use with Moodle. First, the questions must be exported from Respondus using the "IMS QTI 1.1+" personality in Respondus. Second, the file must then be imported using Moodle, which requires that the "Respondus QTI Importer" plug-in be installed to the Moodle Server.

To export questions from Respondus so that they can be used with a Moodle server, follow these steps:

- From the Start menu in Respondus, select the "IMS QTI 1.1+" personality from the pull-down list at the top of the screen
- Open the Respondus file to be exported
- Go to the "Preview & Publish" menu and select the tab "Save QTI XML File"
- For the preference settings in Step 1, select “Points as decimal numbers” and “QTI XML zip file using IMS Content Packaging 1.1.3”
- Save the file and make a note of its location on your hard drive

Be sure that the "Respondus QTI Importer" plug-in has been installed to the Moodle server. This must be done by the administrator of the Moodle server. (For more information on the plug-in, see the following KB article http://www.respondus.com/esupport/?kb=132).

To import questions into Moodle follow these steps:

- Login to your course and select the "Questions" administration feature
- Select the "Import" tab
- Select the desired category to import the questions
- Un-check "from file:"
- Select "Respondus QTI format"
- Select "Browse..." and choose the zip package to import
- Select "Upload this file"

I've been testing this now a bit, and it works quite well. However, some things won't transfer from WebCT 6 cleanly:

  • The second column of matching questions from WebCT 6 are converted to text from HTML.
  • I was reported that a matching question with just two alternative answers cannot be imported to Moodle.
  • Algorithmic ("calculated") questions cannot be imported to Moodle, but have to be recreated manually in Moodle.
  • The scoring of essay questions is reset to one.
  • Short answer questions with multiple fields for answers cannot be imported to Moodle, but have to be created manually as embedded questions.
These are all pretty minor issues I think.

In our version of Moodle (1.9 I think) Respondus QTI format is not listed on the Import tab. Do I need to install a modification to get this?
