This is probably better in the Moodle Docs area (but I'm not familiar with wikis).

I am in the process of building new "how to" videos (I'm not a professional so please be forewarned).

So far I have:
  • local install in Windows of 1.7.2
  • upgrading 1.7.2 to 1.8.2 (local install but would work for server to)
Coming soon:
Videos can be found

http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=45c51ece506fd614ab1eab3e9fa335caa2ad85fd66c033a1

They are larger and Windows Media Player format.

JW,

  1. Before I commented I thought I should watch your videos, so I clicked on your link and tried to watch one of them. It told me I had to login so I created an account for myself (had to click the Create button twice), then clicked on the filename again and nothing much happened. So I clicked it again and it said it was already in My Files (the msg. was on the screen for such a short time that I had to click the link a third time to read it). So I clicked on the My Files tab and got a page that looked a lot like the previous one. I clicked on the filename link again and a new window opened that looked a lot like the previous ones, except that the URL in the address box contained the file name download.php, but no download occurred. I was never asked for where to save it. Clicking on the video filename again did essentially nothing. So I clicked on the "Tell us what you think" link. There I found some text and part of it said if I encountered problems downloading or anything to go to the FAQ, so I clicked on that link and nothing happened. So I logged out and gave up.
  2. I wanted to make sure you are aware that there are already some how-to videos available, one of which is referenced in the docs, that cover some of your topics. For example, installing with cPanel. See
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2923364681084515082 (hey, wait a minute -- those are yours! At least you can actually watch them without jumping through 25,000 hoops.)

  3. You might want to skip the Fantastico video. See http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=80672#p361232

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your feedback and heads up.

1) This is very odd. I tried the URL in my original post on my machine using FF & IE7 and on my wife's machine... worked fine. No login required. When I click on the file I want (fantastico install of moodle 1.8.2.wmv) I get a popup window that says "processing download request" then after a second I get "Click here to start download." Upon clicking on the download link I am able to save or view the video using Windows Media Player.

2) Yeah - an old version and poor video quality that is why I did the new version.

3) Oh Boy! - I'll have to look into this more.

Thanks again.

JW,

FYI:

  1. The file I tried to play was the one on local install. My popup blocker is and was turned off. My browser is IE7 also.
  2. Your competition's (Hagley's) video, which is the one referenced in http://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle as the tutorial in the third paragraph of the page, specifically mentions problems with Fantastico and that it will guide you to install Moodle with cPanel without it.

RLE,

I tried the videos from work - no problems. I also just tried the local install using IE7 & Vista - no problems... very strange.

I'll pull the Fantastico video for now until I have a chance to look at things further.

Thanks again for the info.

Jeff
