We are using Moodle 1.7+, and we are unable to reply for Post in Site News option. I'm not gettng Reply Link.
Help me in this.
Thanks,
Rajesh,
Only instructors and administrators can reply to a post in the news forum. You can go to "roles" for that forum and add individuals to the "teacher" role, so that they can post. That will not change their general user roles--just their roles for that item. I hope that helps.

Hi - thanks for the explination -- this has been confusing to myself and the other users of our Moodle installation following my upgrade to 1.8.
However, when I go to the 'roles' setting for a forum, I see all the participants in the moodle as being eligible for the 'teacher' setting. I.e. I have 42 people in my class, but 2254 in the Moodle. When I go to the 'teacher' role setting, I see all 2254 students. Should I just move them all in? Find the ones in the class?
This seems a very klunky interface to the problem of allowing people to post. I understand the generality of roles and the benefits it provides, but I also see it as being a stumbling block for people adopting Moodle.

ooohhhh...whatever you do, don't add all the people. It sends mail to ALL of them.
Bad news on my part.
Am I missing a simple way to deal with the 'forum' permissions other than manually adding in all students in a class? This seems like a massive waste of time. General solutions are nice, but not spending an hour doing something I didn't have to do previously is nicer.

Hi Dirk,
Role overrides often provide a simpler way of dealing with forum permissions. Please see the forum permissions documentation for further information.

Helen,
Thanks for your reply - that helped clarify many things. I was able to change the capabilities for the student role using an 'admin' account. However, I was unable to figure out how to get the Teacher in that class to have the rights to override roles / capabilities for modules in their own course. The "roles" documentation appears to be incomplete on this or I'm not using the correct terms in trying to find the material.
I tried using the Admin -> Users -> Set permissions interface to give teachers the ability to override roles for students, but I didn't didn't see the "override roles" tab in the forum when logged in as a teacher.
Am I missing something obvious?

Hi Dirk,
I'm glad my reply helped clarify some things for you.
Regarding enabling a teacher to override roles, in addition to allowing the override roles capability, you need to set which role (e.g. student) that teachers can override. Please see the Override roles documentation for more information.

Helen,
That completely solves it! I think I will repay your efforts by writing up short documentation of how to use roles for people upgrading from 1.6 to role based moodles. Many thanks!
