I've added a new block to the Modules & Plugins page: Youtube Video Playlist Block.

Inspired by the discussion in this thread, it allows each block to have it's own playlist of videos, from which it will select one at random to display on the page.

Hi Mónico,

That's great. Have you had a chance to look at translating the block strings into Spanish? See /youtube_video/lang/en_utf8/block_youtube_video.php for an example smile

Hi!

This is a great block - thanks so much!

One suggestion/request.

Rather than the videos playing randomly, would it be possible for a small list to appear beneath the video so students can watch specific videos?

Just an idea!

Thanks again

Hi,

I am also really interested in this block but where do I install it.

I have insalled it in "Blocks" and I have run my admin/index.php and it still does not appear anywhere on my moodle.

Should I have installed it in "Mod" like Ahmet did.  When I do that and run my admin/index.php, I get the same message as him.

I have also added the language files so that is okay but how do I get the block on the moodle.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ahmet,

I have just gotten my YouTube to run.

You have installed the youtube_video file in mod and it should be installed in "blocks".

Hi Ahmet,

You might need to just delete all of it, run your index and then start over again.

Don't forget to look in your moodle "site administration" section in "modules" and click on "blocks" to be sure it is deleted before you try to reinstall it.

After you reinstall it, run your index again and then check to see if it appears in your "site administration" section under blocks.

Good luck.  I hope this helps.

Will this work with other video sharing sites or just YouTube?

We have our own video sharing website and it creates very similar links etc. based on http://www.phpmotion.com/

Since our teachers use our own internal video sharing, it would be very cool to integrate it with this module into our moodle site.

Thanks,
-Chris

Re: Youtube Video Playlist Block

Paul,

I love the block and am using in every class that I am facilitating in my Moodle site. Thanks so much for your work.

I have one question - is it possible to allow for html to be inserted in the description of the video?

My idea is that I would post questions relating to the video in the description and then link to an activity (forum post, assignment, etc.). When I try to insert the html code for a break or a link, it is stripped from the description in the database.

However, when I manually edit the database entry to include such characters, they stay and display as I would like them to for the block.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Paul,

I just added the Youtube block to my site and in one of my courses. This course is setup for guest access. However, when you open the course, the Youtube block appears with the title and description of the video, but no video plays.

I have tried on several different computers and get the same results on all.

Any suggestions?

Paul,

Here is the video  "How To Create a Wireless Network at Home"

It doesn't seem to matter which video I put in the block, they all do the same.

Here is the link to my course http://165.139.77.25/course/view.php?id=9

I am running Moodle ver 1.8.3 on a Windows 2000 server, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

Paul,

It seems that after re-starting the server this morning, my video link is working.

I am going to try some different videos, just to make sure. I'll let you know if there are any other problems.

I am just wanted to test it now before my teachers start using it.

Do you know if videos from TeacherTube will work as well as YouTube?

Thanks,
Roy

Re: Youtube Video Playlist Block

by Ms. Letha Sanders -

Hi and thanks for such a terrific block!  The videos work wonderfully.

I see a few problems and thought I'd ask about them:

  • The side-panel block (box) the video is in is too narrow and cuts off one side of the video.
  • The video block leaves a large gap about 1 inch to the right of the video block (doesn't matter if it's moved to the left or right panel) and it pushes the rest of the course screen to the right so that my course is no longer lined up in the center.

Can this be fixed inside my Cornflower theme?

I'really find this block useful on the front of my moodle site as well as in the teacher/student training courses and specific student courses.

Can you help me with this?  Thanks very much.  Ms. Letha
