Copying Moodle Structure

Can anyone help?  I want to upgrade from 1.6.3 to 1.8.1 with a clean download of 1.8.1 because original installation of 1.6.3 is not performing correctly.  Can I lift the structure of ALL courses across?  If so, guidance much appreciated.

Stephanie - I am not sure what you mean by "lift the structure of ALL courses" - generally we talk about upgrading from 1.6 to 1.8. Check out http://docs.moodle.org/en/Upgrading_to_Moodle_1.8 and let me know if you have any specific questions. I really do recommend starting by making a good backup and then putting your Moodle into maintenance mode. Peace - Anthony

Hi Anthony

Thanks for your reply.  I have been told that our 1.6.3 installation is volatile and we are not able to upgrade - it has not backed up since use (October 06).  We have now backed up all courses manually to avoid total loss.  It is the course categories I want to copy over - is this possible?  Also, is it a fact that 1.8.1 has different php settings.  As you can see, I'm not the techy in our college!

Stephanie - I would be curious as to what is making your installation "volatile". I am not sure what a manual backup consists of - do you mean by going to each course and running Moodle's backup routine to create a zip file? Or do you mean manually backing up the database with phpMyAdmin or some other tool? 1.8 does require PHP version 4.3.0 or higher although I have been using PHP 5 for some time. See if you can get your tech folks to ask for a little help. I would be happy to provide assistance in getting you upgraded. If I had to guess, I suspect that you may have a couple third party modules like the feedback or questionnaire module that gave the tech folks some trouble when upgrading. Whatever issue they are running into can be dealt with but I need more technical information about what happened during an attempt to upgrade the database. Peace - Anthony
