1.6 ->1.8 Install hangs...

Upgrading to 1.8, the first page opened fine, showing that my server meets the requirements, but after that things went sideways... I clicked continue, and the page went into beachball mode for over ten minutes. I knew that the upgrade might take a while, but I gave up after waiting almost 15 minutes and tried opening the moodle/admin page again in a new window. The process started off the same way (with the requirements page), but now I am looking at a window with the following message:

Upgrade already running in this session, please wait!
Click on the exclamation marks to ignore this warning (!!!).
( Continue )

I have tried waiting, but nothing seems to happen. This has been going on for well over an hour now, so I am not sure what the heck is going on.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

I still have not worked this out, and I am locked out until I can. (I tried to wait out the error message above for a few hours before giving up...) I decided to try to restore my database and start from scratch, but it seems that I made a fatal error on the database backup. Oops... I have asked my hosting service if they can roll time back 24 hours for me so that I can pretend this never happened, but I am not sure if they can do that or not. Anybody out there have any ideas how I can fix this?
Thanks

Hi Stephen,
I am sorry to hear about your predicament.

I have worked on sites which had problems upgrading because one of the following:
  • the Moodle 1.6 database had not been migrated to unicode
  • there were non-standard modules
  • there were modifications to standard Moodle scripts
I don't know if these apply to your situation, but it would be something to check.

Other than that, I suggest you have a word with a friendly programmer near you, to see if they can coax the upgrade through to completion.

good luck
Gordon

Gordon,
Thanks for chiming in. Your three suggestions are good ones, but this is a very basic install which I have not modified at all. A look at the original config file confirms that the database was in unicode as well...

I am trying to get my hosting service to roll back the clock on my server to see if that will help, but I am not too confident at this point. I think I am looking at some heavy data loss on this one. I was able to roll back the DB a bit, and then access the site using the old 1.6 directory, but it also tried to update the database and no longer had me listed as admin, so things have definitely gone sideways here.

I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope that I can somehow back my way out of this...

Steve

Isn't "trying something twice, and expecting different results" one of the signs of idiocy? Well, I tried upgrading from 1.6 to the latest 1.8 again...
Once again, the installation hung. I waited it our for over an hour, but it just wasn't going anywhere, so I started preparing for a fresh install from all of my backups. Before this, decided to try something rather simple though, which oddly enough seemed to do the trick. I had started the installation from http://mydomain.com/moodle/admin, so I tried it a second time by simply adding in the "www". That was all it took, and my site seems to be running fine now...

If I had only tried this the last time...
