when I try to view a saved chat session, i get dumped back to moodle mainpage
I have it set to never delete and that anyone can view it?

I am using 1.2.1
I click on "view past chats" and nothing appears
I have it set to save for 120 days...

Yes, this is a known bug in 1.2.1. Fixed in the imminent 1.3.
A workaround I think is to create some dummy groups in the course.

Actually, I'm not sure about the groups fix ... there was a few things fixed after 1.2.1.
You could also just download and unpack the latest chat module and replace all your existing files in mod/chat with it.
