Missing [Add a new discussion topic] button after upgrade to 1.7.1+

I upgraded from 1.5.3 to 1.7.1+ after making sure my environment met the new reqs (unicode, db, php, etc). Easy, and nearly painless...

After the upgrade, one teacher has a class that does not have the [Add a new discussion topic] button in the news forum. (The rest of the classes seem okay.) To test, I created a second standard/general forum in his class with the same results.

The only difference I can see between teachers is that this one forces groups at the course level. Could this cause the symptoms I see? If so, any way to fix the problem without changing the force group flag?

Cheers,
Kev-

Does the teacher not have the students assigned to groups? That sometimes causes quirky things like this to happen. One of my teachers was having the same problem, and her course was forcing groups but none of her students were assigned to groups. When I removed the groups requirement from her course settings and the forum settings, the button reappeared.

I appreciate your post. I'm not sure I would have caught this on my own.

I had the exact same problem and changing that option fixed it.

Why is that happening?
