Actually, never mind.
I found and copied the script offered in that thread and it seemed to work _while I was logged into that session_ but when I logged out and logged back in, my default admin account had lost its meaning again (though I could see some pages but not others (/auth* gave me "noaccess").
Running the script again (after deleting the admin7 user it had created) gave me the same "done" message but it did nothing.
There seem to be some serious things not being checked in 1.7 (which is all my ISP offers through CPanel).
I ended backup up my database and deleting moodle. It's really not ready for prime-time, IMO. Unless someone can suggest a way in which I can totally kill/delete 'roles' from 1.7, it's way too risky to let my wife use it. I already wasted half a day on playing with it only to delete it in the end. Drat.
