i am pretty new to moodle and i was wondering, can you check which version of moodle you have? Does everyone automatically have the updated version?

If you are not an administrator, you might be able to see your version of Moodle by hovering your mouse over the moodle logo that appears (I hope!) at the bottom of the front page on your site. We use one of the standard themes for the site, and this works for us.
Otherwise, you can check the details in the admin screens.
I would think it unusual to have installed a chat module that did not come packaged with the moodle code, although I am sure that is possible.
