Is having shell access to a remote server advantageous for using Moodle in any way? Currently I am running Mac OSX and for an extra fee can estblish shell access to my web host. This would entail additional cost and learning some *nix, so I'm wondering if it's even worth it.
Thanks in advance, as always.
Steven
I.M.H.O. shell access has a bit advantage, but not so much to pay more for it.
If you wan't to learn some *nix, install it on a own computer which you can "safely" distroy (in sense of software)

For setting up things like cron shell is especially useful. It depends on whether the host has set up a good web-based control panel or not.
The host uses cpanel, which is quite easy to use of course. I am always tempted to learn more *nix but realistically there's enough on my plate already. Better finish the leftovers before starting another course.
Thanks for you help.
