Is there a feature that can allow the teacher(s) to enable or disable all "chat" activities within a course... The reasoning is, Our high school is just beginning to use Moodle and our district is very skeptical regarding minor aged students safety and abuse. Some teachers like Chat because their students are responsible and respectful, but other teachers do not like chat to be available in their courses due to student abuse. Our district is also concerned and is trying to discourage the student use of Moodle. Currently because of one immature class of students, our entire site has "chat" turned off. Is this something that can be managed differently, or suggested for future versions of Moodle?
I believe what you want can be easily done with creating and assigning relevant roles to the "trusted" students. What version of Moodle are you using?

We are using 1.6. Explain what you mean by "Roles".
If you upgrade to 1.7 or newer you will enjoy the Roles feature.
