How to make chat accessible to students on main page

I've added a chat as an activity on the main menu of the main Moodle page (1.7).

Logging in as a student, I do not get the option to enter chat.  Logged in as an administrator I do get the option.  According to permissions, "student" has rights to chat (using default permissions for student).

Any ideas?

OK so I answered my own question.  I had to give guest users permission to participate in chat, even though these users are logged in as themselves - not as "guest".
