Are there real issues with using windows package in production

I have spent the last week trying to work out how to setup/install/maintain/backup/restore Moodle on Ubuntu, but beleive that it is not going to work for my situation.  So now I am back looking at the windows version.  My question is, for a school environment where low maintenance and easy rebuild is required, are there any real issues in using the complete Windows package?

After reading through many of the Moodle documents, it looks like if I set paswords for the areas at http://localhost/security there should be no problems.

I know this sounds like the easy way out, but I am the only Tech, Admin, Help Desk guy for just over 1000 users at our school.  That setup is easy to setup, maintain, and if the server dies, I could rebuild Moodle and restore the data in no time.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Steve

Could you tell exactly what the problem was? That might help the Ubuntu/Linux people.

I tried Ubuntu Lamp, but then could not work out what I needed to continue with the installation of Moodle.  I have not done much with Linux and could not find instructions detailed enough to get me through.  Also, whilst working on that, I was looking into how to do daily backups to tape(DAT4) and could not find enough info to make me confident that if I had to rebuild in a hurry and restore data, that I would be able to do it.  Then tried Ubuntu desktop (I like the way it worked) and stopped it loading the GUI, this allowed me to run startx and work in a more freindly environment, but then had issues with AMP...

Running on windows, NTBackup will allow me to do any backup and restore and if the server had an issue, I could rebuild/replace easerly.

Hello Stephen

Thanks for the prompt feedback!

I see, this an issue, which Ubuntu people can not directly address.

In my case I do those things with Linux board tools like (GNU) tar, rsync (over SSH) and dd or mt. All that could be too much in one go ;-(

Sorry that I can not help with your original problem.

I see a real future for OS's like Ubuntu, and schools (that normaly work on very low budgets) are a good way for it to make inroads against Microsoft.  Unfortunatly, I think the people that realy know these OS's need to make it more user freindly for those trying to move from a Microsoft server environment.

Two areas that I noted, no obvious way to backup data as you would use NTBackup on W2k3 etc and why do I have to type things like

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core Fluxbox

to install a program? and when that did not work, I had no way of knowing why it didn't work.

I have a quickie Ubuntu server setup in the Docs.

As for easy administration for Linux/UNIX boxen I would recommend Webmin.

Let me know how I can help!

The Webmin looks good.  I had a look at the Ubuntu page last week, but it seems to be out of date.  It did not take into consideration the ability to do a LAMP install straight from the CD etc.  I did try part of it on a workstation install, but commands like "sudo apt-get install mysql-server" would not work.  I thought it had problems with our proxy (if it was trying to get the package from the net) but I could not work out the problem.

Whilst considering my options I set up a box on WinXP and it is working well (I managed to get 4Gig of RAM for the box), so I do not know if it is worth me still looking at Ubuntu.

Stephen,

I know, it is perhaps too late for you. Still your question "Why command line?" is of massive importance.

The simple answer is that a) it is more powerfull b) it is a level below the graphics layer, so even if graphics fails or where it is not possible (remote server) the command line still works.

Any way, I plan to give a long answer here: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=64984
We will not only do the installation but look aroud a bit 眨眼

This is only a (soft linked) cross-posting. Please do any follow-ups in the above thread.
