Mac Server Install Confusion

Mac Server Install Confusion

Greetings Everyone,
I am installing Moodle on a Mac server 10.4.8. First, I tried following the standard install guide. However, I found the instructions were not much different than the instructions for the "Step-by-Step...on Mac 10.4 Client." I started the AMP install over on a clean install of server 10.4.8 following the "Step-by-Step...on Mac 10.4 Client" with no problem. When I reached the point of installing Moodle, I selected the correct package from the "Mac OS X Packages" tab only to discover after I installed it that the package was the "Moodle4OSX" package, which is not recommended for a production server environments. How much different is the "Step-by-Step...on Mac 10.4 Client" from the standard install instructions? Where do I find the production install package for Mac OS X as opposed to the "Moodle4OSX" package? What... is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the Monty Python quotesmile
Thanks,
George

George, for a production install the steps are very similar to the ones for Unix or Linux. You'll need to install MySQL (and set passwords) and install a PHP package (OS X Client comes with PHP, but it may not be a current version, and doesn't include some of the libraries needed for Moodle to run).

As far as Moodle itself goes, the Standard Moodle Distribution from the Moodle download page should work fine.

You might find the instructions here useful. They refer to old versions of MySQL, PHP, and Moodle, but the installation procedure hasn't changed.

To get production version, you need to deal with all components individually or install Moodle4OSX and then go through steps to make it secure.

In terms of installation, the following link will give you a PDF file with detailed instructions for installing Moodle from scratch on standard OS X system. May be this alternative writeup will be helpful for you.

My package Moodle4MacOSX should work for you. If you want to use it on an internet server you should set better passwords for root in MySQL and for the user moodle who is the admin for Moodle.

To let the Moodle send its pages to oher users outside your Mac you must open the firewall for port 8888 ... this is the server port for HTTP with Moodle4MacOSX. Or you change the port down to 80. Therefore you have to deactivate the originally installed Mac web server ... be sure that it does not work before you start Moodle4MacOSX with port 80.

I saw that http://mamp.info has a MAMP Pro version that should work with better security settings than the other MAMP. As I understood you have to copy the MAMP Pro into the MAMP folder. This application should do all the things with MAMP to get the needed security.
