Using Moodle outside of a learning context

Using Moodle outside of a learning context

I would like to find a space to discuss Moodle matters with people who are using it in a non-educational context. At Radio Regen I run a Moodle site as a meeting point for people working in community radio. The functions and facilities in Moodle were very much what I needed to build an online community and to offer shared resources, however some of Moodle's structure and terminology isn't always 100% appropriate. As well as having a space where people can talk to each other (apologies if it already exist - please tell me where!), it would be good to have access to a list of such sites that allow guest entry/self-enrolment to see how others are using Moodle in the non-educational world. Visitors are welcome to take a look at our site at http://www.communityradiotoolkit.net/communities/

Thanks - I've had a look at Moodle for Business but the emphasis seems to be on commercial use whilst I'm looking at its free use within the voluntary/non-commercial sector, for example for sharing resources. I'm having no joy finding a place on the Moodle sites where people might be meeting, but maybe no-one else is using Moodle outside of a more formal educational context...? Thanks.

Lots of people are using Moodle outside a formal educational context, but there is no one place for these people as their needs are necessarily diverse.

The best place for you is the forums in Using Moodle.

Hi Danielle, I think what you are looking for is the 'look' of a site , and 'terminolgy' used , to be 'non-educational ' ??

I have set up a Moodle site for a firm of accountants , to use as a 'client portal' client support There are general areas where you post news faq's etc , and other areas where one client has their own 'area' to upload/download files, reports , ask for assistance etc . The main task in setting up , was to remove all 'education type wording' via the Language settings . I have another site , that is set up for a group of consultants , its our message board, and Exhange Mart area a 'community type site'

Hi Danielle,

I have also setup a Moodle to be used in a non-educational context. I would suggest to use at least 1.7, where you do no more need to stuck to the terms "teacher" and "student". These terms are now called "roles" and can be renamed and redefined at "Administration ► Users ► Permissions ► Define roles".

I have renamed the default wording "Teacher" to "Course editor" and the default wording "Student" to "Subscriber", kept the additional default roles "Administrator" and "Course creator" and removed the other ones, thus having 4 roles in total, with a general, non-educational wording.

regards,
rob.

I would like to make more use of Moodle in an informal educational context allowing open access without having the irritating (in that context) distraction of a login box. Unfortunately, unless I am missing something there seems to be no simple way of eliminating the login box in Moodle. It is straightforward in systems like Drupal and Joomla (and the administrator then gets in by going to a separate page with a name like ..../administrator or ..../?q=user). Am I missing something? Or should this be one for the roadmap?
