Hi fellow moodlers,  smile

I have had this problem for quite some time, but haven't posted about it.  The previous thread prompted me to finally raise it here.  It is a different issue so I decided to start a new thread.

WhenI check my site logs the IP address is shown as Milton, Australia!

Timothy Allen [Daejeon, KR] : (211.177.150.87) is located in Milton, New South Wales (state), Australia. (-35.32, 150.40)

And the same location is shown for all my students:

Jun-Ho Han [, Ko] : (218.238.163.94) is located in Milton, Australia. (-35.32, 150.40)

We are all in Korea, nowhere near Milton Australia. surprise And I am sure our servers are not there either.

Any ideas why this is so?  mixed

Tim.

I think it is not very reliable, since any time it finds an IP it does not know, it reports it being in Amsterdam mixed , for some reason (at least this happens to me). Anyway, it works well for many IP's though (I am not sure wich case happens most).

The system we are using for IP -> location is very old and not maintained ... read about it here ...

Note this is an inexact science at the best of times:

There may be some newer open source alternatives now that were not around at the time when I implemented this stuff ...
