A couple of questions...
Is 1.6 being actively updated? I guess it is.
If we make a fix in 1.6, I will need to make this in 1.7 and in HEAD too. Are there any pitfalls here, or better yet can somebody spell out the (middle) step to update 1.7?

Moodle 1.6 is certainly still being maintained, and I even sometimes commit fixes even to 1.5. This means that sometimes I have to merge my fix from 1.5 into 1.6, 1.7 and HEAD. You probably know that the procedure for merging changes between the different versions is described in Moodle Docs at http://docs.moodle.org/en/Development:CVS_for_developers#Working_with_branches and the 1.7 branch is not treated any different from all earlier branches.
