I managed to get the 'My Files' / File Manager block installed in a test instance of moodle.
Two things reguired :
1) the backen database is MySQL
2) the file that sets up stuff in the database needs to be modified as per the thread in the Repositories forum.

- Created an instance of the mod that allows teachers and students to upload.
- Created a date field, a student name field and a text area field for comments about the files.
- Created multiple fields for file uploads.
- Tweaked the templates a tiny bit.
- Viola! Instant file repository.

No, the way I have it set up is not private. You are right about that.

You might want to have a look at my new journal mod, it gives each student a place to add entries to their journal and each entry can have an attachment. If you do not enable submitting/grading of entries, then it is completely private to each student. If you want to use it only as storage (rather than as a reflective journal), then you could change the word Questions on the Questions tab to Instructions or something like that, and then add the intro text there--otherwise the Questions tab might seem out of place.

The missing [Add new entry] is probably due to our own course setting, I have spoken to our System Admin & she would be working on it.Thanks Art for providing a gd creative use for the activity. Based on his idea, I made some changes to the layout to suit our school's needs, so here I am sharing it for the others.hope that would be helpful.

- Display Time added

- Remove the ##approve##
- Lastly, click on Save template.

- Display only the ##more## and ##delete##

In case you are wondering, how to identify who the original user who added the file, without adding a Text file to let the student input their own name. AFAIK, ##user## captured the name of the uploader. I have tried to save changes made to one of my dummy student's file, the ##user## did not display mine instead it remain as the dummy student's name.

##user## reports the owner of the database record, that is the name of person who created a given entry. At present, the database module does not keep track of who makes changes. It keeps track only of who created the entry, when, and when it was last changed.
In light of that, your "Display Time modified & by ##User##" above is wrong. You can have "Display Time created & by ##User##".

The work around that I have is really low tech--I have an assignment that allows an uploaded file in each class. It has no beginning or end date and students are allowed to resubmit. I call it home/school transfer and each course has one.
As I said--very low tech, but it works!

This is similar to the method I used. For each formal assignment requiring an online hand-in, I created an informal and open-ended "Drop Box" assignment for transferring the files between home and school.
Then I realised that this was overkill - instead they can use the official assignment as the dropbox until the assignment closes, which has the advantage that I only need to look in one place to add comments and encouragement as their work progresses. The potential pitfall with this technique is that of over-writing a current version with a previous version, but this is overcome by teaching the students to have a strict version-numbering system on their files (it gave me a good starting point in a lesson anyway). This has the added advantage that they have multiple incremental backups of their work on (possibly) multiple dispersed machines (home, school and the current version on the Moodle server) - thus reducing the risk of total loss and allowing them to go back to any previous version. (This gave me another starting point, where we talked about backups and their value).
The dropboxes can still be used though, for files that aren't necessarily connected with the assignment. I often muse, though, about the necessity for pupils to have an online area where they can just store files under the umbrella of needing to transfer them home; surely a school needs to provide space for essential and relevant files rather than just any old thing (usually illegally-downloaded mp3s *sigh*).</2d's worth>

I am still liking the file sharing (file manager) block.
That does sounds great and would be useful. I would also like a "private" space for the students to store their "stuff". Looked like the File Sharing block was public. Does it have settings to make it private? Thanks for the quick reply Mary!

Me too. it would only be "public" when user A has choose to share an item with User B. Otherwise, it's a private area.

I haven't tested the block you mentioned (adding it to my increasingly large 'to-do' list!).
You could always use forums to store files but these are open.
