Hi,
I'm working with a professor who is dubious about how the weighting works. What we need to know is how precisely the categories' weights are applied. For example, say we have a category "Quizzes" to which we assign a value of 10%. We put 13 quizzes in the category. Is each of these quizzes worth
A) 1/13 of 10% such that in the end the weighted grades of all the items in the category add up to 10% of the final grade? or
B) is each quiz in itself worth 10% of the final grade?
I presume it's the former, but I'd like to know for sure before he plans his grading system around it...
If someone could offer me a coherent, not-too-technical (Math-y is welcome; he's an accounting professor.) explanation of precisely how the category weights work, I'd appreciate it very much.
Thank you!
Eleanor J.
edit: Whoops, forgot to mention: we're running 1.6, in case it's relevant...
The gradebook takes the points for a category, adds them up, and multiplies by the weighting factor. If all 13 items in a category are worth the same number of points, your supposition 1 applies.
I added some more details to the Gradebook docs.
