by Dominique Bauer.

Hello Dhushan,

For the Summative assessment, use the following calculation:

=if(AND([[Summative]]>=38.5,[[Summative]]<=40),40,if(AND([[Summative]]>=48.5,[[Summative]]<=50),50,if(AND([[Summative]]>=73.5,[[Summative]]<=75),75,[[Summative]])))

For the Formative assessment, replace Summative with Formative in the above
 formula.

For the Practicals assessment, use the following calculation:

=if(AND([[Practicals]]>=58.5,[[Practicals]]<=60),60,[[Practicals]])

by Dhushan Ramduth.

Good day,

We need to implement a rather strange type of rounding for Grades int he Gradebook.

There are 2 tests ( Summative and Formative Assessments - with weightings 70% and 30% ). THe needed is to round the grades for these tests the students receive to the following:

38.5 - 39.9 rounded up to 40% (qualify for supplementary)

48.5 – 49.9 rounded up to 50 in theory (pass mark for supplementary)

73.5 – 74.9 rounded up to 75 (distinction)

There is a separate requirement for Practicals, this is in some of the courses but not all.

For practical 58.5 – 59.9 rounded up to 60% (pass mark)

We have tried using nested if statements and round function but cannot get the calculation to work. We have read so far that the best option would be to create a a new category and add the calculation there.

If anyone has any pointers on how to best do this, this will help greatly.

Using marking guide with marking workflow doesn't allow marker to be selected from submission screen

by Hannah Dormer-Bolton.

Hi

I have an assignment set with advanced grading (marking guide) and marking workflow selected. If I use simple direct grading, the marker name and status can be updated from the submissions page

If I change the marking method to marking guide, these are no longer available

They are only available if I go into the grading page through the three dots

This would be really time consuming as we wouldn't be able to bulk update markers and status. Does anyone know why this is happening and a solution? Thanks

Grade calculation with optional questions

by Hannah Dormer-Bolton.

Hi

I am using an advanced grading marking guide for an assignment. The overall grade is out of 100 but there are 140 points guide as the candidate has to select which questions they would like to answer to make up the 100 points.

Can anyone advise me how Moodle deals with optionality? I have managed to create the correct grade in the gradebook but putting a 1.4 multiplier onto the assignment, however it does not display the correct grade until it is released to the gradebook and the submissions screen shows an adjusted grade, which is very confusing for moderation. The candidate below scored 100/140 points, which I would like to be able to see in the submissions screen. It displays as 71/100. However it is correct that the final grade released to the gradebook should be 100/100.

by Shirley Gregorczyk.

You should be able to control this in your gradebook setup. In your gradebook setup only select those activities (Grade Items) that you want to include in the pass/fail calculations for the course total. Sometimes this works best creating a Grade Category and using a custom course total formula.

Grade categories - MoodleDocs

by Hannah Dormer-Bolton.

Hi

I have a course where the neither of the two assignments has a pass mark, but both are weighted differently to count towards the course total which has a 65% pass mark. If I set the letter grade scale for the course to display everything under 64% as a fail, it also displays assignments under 64% as a fail in the user report, which is incorrect as they do not have fail criteria. However, if I turn off the letter grade display in the user report, it no longer provides the pass / fail information for the overall course total.

I'd like to either have no letter grades displaying for assignments in the user report, only for the course total, or have a different letter grade scale for the assignments and course total within the one course. Are either of those options possible?

Use percentage of category total in calculation?

by Onno Schuit.

Moodle's grade calculation formula doesn't expose a category percentage directly.
CategoryName
gives you the aggregate value (weighted mean, natural sum, etc.), not a percentage out of 100. There's no built-in formula function that returns the denominator dynamically. (In the formula,
CategoryName
is the ID number you assigned to the category, not its display name. You set this under "ID number" in the category's edit settings. Use double square brackets around it.)

The cleanest workaround is probably to set the category's "Maximum grade" to 100. If you use Natural aggregation, Moodle scales the summed points to fit that max. That means
CategoryName
represents the percentage directly, so you can use it in any calculated grade item elsewhere in the course without dividing.

If you can't change the category max (say, because it's used for other purposes), create a hidden calculated grade item with a formula like =
CategoryName
/ 250 * 100, substituting 250 for your actual category max. That item holds the percentage and can be referenced by name in any other formula in the course.

As far as I can tell, the denominator isn't accessible as a formula variable. For Natural aggregation it's the sum of all grade item maximums in the category. If you add items over time, you'd need to keep that hardcoded value in sync. Setting the category max to 100 from the start avoids that problem entirely.

P.S.: the Moodle forum post editor is giving me grieve, not displaying square brackets. As mentioned, CategoryName should be surrounded by two square brackets in the formula editor.

by Ela Goyal.

Hi Onno,
Thanks for your reply. I am using Moodle 5.0
For now, I have asked all my teachers to use Grader Report (editing on) for updating marks for specific grade-item, instead of Single View.
I cant ask the teachers to unlock the other Gradeitems that are already graded and locked. So, that option does not work for us.

It would be very helpful, if Moodle could look into this issue on Single View page and get it resolved.

thanks
