good afternoon ladies and gentlemen i was wondering if somebody would be able to advice me on how to disable the messaging function on a MOODLE site please.

As admin, you can go to configuration>variables. Find "messaging" (more than halfway down the page) and set the dropdown value to "no".
This is a site-wide setting.
