Hello everyone,
I've just upgraded to 1.6 beta 5 and I also migrated the database to utf-8, so far no problem, everything worked great.
However since I've started using moodle I started translating the parts I was going to use so my users would have a complete greek enviroment, the greek lang pack didn't suite me so I started working on that. Now I have a moodle site which is translated in a way that suites me best , I have altered lots of strings from the greek lang pack because they did not suite my needs (I am using moodle not in an educational facility but in large insurance company here so lot of terms didn't suite me).
Now with the upgrade and the migration I have to download a new utf8_el lang pack which gets me right where I started, do I HAVE TO do all the translations from the beginning? why? is there a way to convert my old lang files to utf8 rather then re-translating them?
I have done so much work and now I cannot use it, moodle 1.6 is excellent and, why should I have to translate it all over again? does anyone know of a way to keep my old lang files and ocnvert them in utf-8?

I added a guide on how to convert files from another encoding to UTF8 in the docs. I hope it's usefull. Please extend the documentation if steps are not clear or missing

Hello Koen and thank you for addition in the moodle docs on how to convert old files with different encoding to utf-8.
I am sorry that I didn't answer soon but I was pre-occupied with other projects however I found another way to do it using, not a free tool, Frontpage.
I just opened all the files, one by one, in Frontpage and I wwent in properties and saved them as utf-8, obviously your proposal is much quicker as it converts all files in a folder bu my way worked

Although I have made the conversion with frontpage I am having several problems with general function due to the language pack I use, but they are not for the current forum.
In moodle docs you propose the software Cygwin which I have never heard before and because your way seemed from the beggining a lot safer and more correct I decided to download and install Cygwin.
I am not familiar with the program and I don't know which components I should install, could you please instruct in which components to install in order to perform the action y ou are advising me.

As far as I know, a standard installation includes iconv, so you shouldn't select any additional components.

Hey Koen,
Sorry for my late reply but I was in over my head, I finally fixed it, I think. The thing is that perhaps the conversion I had made to my previous lang/el files to utf was not all that good, I re did it, using notepad++ and not frontpage.
