Multiple language site

...as opposed to multi-language content! Hence the new question as I can't really find anything that relates to this.

The scenario is that we have an essentially English language Moodle site. Because we are a UK university that teaches in English. So all our menus, links in our navigation bar and so on are currently designed for English speaking students being taught in English speaking campuses and courses.

I can see and read about various ways of getting multi-language content into individual moodle courses. But what if we had an overseas campus with its own category and courses where students (and staff) were teaching and learning in something other than English. It would be nice to present them with a Moodle space that didn't look as though it was an English site with a bit of localised content bolted on.

Obviously in the user profiles they would have their preferred "local" language. But if we wanted to change our navigation bar links to be "local" links to their campus for instance, can we do that?

We've never actually looked at things like different templates for different categories since on our main site we have always wanted to promote familiarity and standardisation as far as possible. But now we may want to deliberately do the opposite - have an entirely different look for people using courses in particular categories.

I guess one area of potential difficulty is the site home/dashboard area. For whilst here we could make use of multi-language filters and so on, unlike a category template we wouldn't easily be able to change the navigation bar links based on their language.

But as long as we made sure all the courses they were enrolled on were in "their" overseas school's category we could otherwise make it look like they were on a completely other language version of Moodle.

Any obvious thoughts, gotchas and so on, about how feasible this would be?

Who is making such sites? Can you give us some links?

This is a sample I made sometime ago. https://demo.schoolweb.ch/. It has English and German courses. Visit both and show me where "a bit of localised content bolted on".

Moodle is capable of delivering content in multiple language using a couple of different techniques/concepts. Look around in the Languages forum.
