Moodle mobile app: Two issues that prevent our organization from enabling it for our students. Any way to resolve these problems?

Hello.

We are running the latest verison of Moodle on our Ubuntu 20.04 server. it was installed manually.

Everything is working great and we (IT folk)  and  teachers are having a blast working with the system, but we had to completely disable the Moodle mobile app coz of the following "issues":

1) For some reason the Moodle mobile app's video player, unlike the web video player, has to download the whole video to start playing it. At least it seems like this is the case considering how long it takes for a mobile video palyer to actually start playing our videos (mp4 format,720\1080p, average size is ~600-1000 MByte)

2) We haven't found any way  to disable the option to download videos in the Moodle mobile app.  We can disable downloading activities and other stuff, but videos still can be downloaded.

Is there any way we could "fix" this on our end?

Kind regards,
Alex

Not an answer to your issue but an observation. Videos are just a pain... I would recommend using a proper video server (or even just YouTube) rather than uploading huge mp4 files to Moodle. There are all sorts of fun and games around delivering videos properly that these servers work around. The videos are probably causing performance issues on your main site - you just haven't noticed (yet).

I am just going to move this to the Moodle for Mobile forum in case the team wants to add anything more.

What do you mean by a proper video server?

Unfortunately we can't use youtube..it looks like our criminal government will block it soon.=(

Kaltura springs to mind, but there are many "streaming video" services. Kaltura has a number of Moodle integrations.

They cost money, but the data goes in "the cloud" and all the irritating problems about delivering video become somebody elses problem.

I used Medial about 10 years ago
https://moodle.org/plugins/mod_helixmedia
We used to call it "Youtube in a Box".
Takes the load off your Moodle and gives you a nice management interface. It costs money but they know exactly what they are doing.

Hi Alex,

- regarding point 1, the mobile app will try first to stream the video (see https://docs.moodle.org/403/en/Creating_mobile-friendly_courses#Media_download_for_offline_usage)
- regarding point 2, unfortunately, we don't have a way to prevent video downloading only. However, in Mobile app settings -> Mobile features -> Disabled features you can try selecting the options "Offline" or "Course download" or a combination of both to see if works for your particular case.

Please let us know if the previous works for you

Regards, Juan

Strange..we have videos in mp4 format (h264, aac) and they get streamed perfectly fine from google disk, onedrive and when our students use web browsers. However the mobile app always tries to download them first judging the time it takes for vifdeos to actually start playing.

Nah, this doesn';t work for videos.

Kind regards,
Alex
