New Install to 4.2 from a previous 3.10 Site - Layout Help

Hello all, this may seem like a small problem, and it somewhat is, but it's been a while since I had to modify our front page.  Long story short, we previously hosted our own Moodle site with our own hardware.  As that hardware began to fail, we attempted to migrate to a new hosted server.  The migration didn't work out, so we simply installed a new 4.2 version of Moodle.  Things are working well so far, except the general layout, despite using the same generic "BOOST" theme.

Our old 3.10 front page looked like this:

Our new front page looks like this:

So the problem right now seems petty, but I can't seem how to get the left menu navigation up on the new install.  I've tried to match as many settings in Appearance that I can.  I also am unsure of how to get the "Home Settings Participants Reports Question Bank More" links to disappear.  The fonts and sizes and overall layout seems off, despite me not changing much of anything in the old site, and odd considering that both use the same base Theme.

Again, I haven't had to mess with this much in almost 13 years.  So any help or gentle direction would be very much appreciated.

Looks like the Boost Theme in Moodle 4 took a lot of that away. That's unfortunate. I really liked the previous version, and layout. Does anyone know if there's a rebuilt version of the old "Boost" for Moodle 4?

If you're able, check out the boost union theme. https://moodle.org/plugins/theme_boost_union.

It keeps things pretty close to boost, but adds a lot more flexibility, such as the ability to control course width. Unfortunately, the old left menu is gone in 4.x Boost, so looking around other themes might be an option to see if there is one that meets your needs.

As Bob mentioned Boost Union, I want to give a shout-out to that excellent theme. Recently the MUA held a Town Hall where the creators and maintainers such as Alex Bias enthusiastically demonstrated how Boost Union enhances Boost and they seem very committed to keep maintaining it with each new version of Moodle.

Petty? Ha, ha, ha! Life is one long chain of petty things! And that is what counts.

Coming back to this "petty problem": The Moodle 4 UX shook the boat violently. The amazing thing is, there are sailors who enjoy the ride. The others run for help in all directions:
- Repair with CSS and other magic. I keep tags on Rick Jerz work. Read the Theme forum. If you enjoy deep diving, enter the User experience (UX).

- Count on additional theme developers. I've found close to 15 Moodle 4.1 capable themes in the plug-in database. Yes, Boost union is one of them. Their approach is unique. It looks identical to the official Boost until you start to configure it!

- Going back to 3.9 LTS. My preference - with no future (beyond Dec 2023)

- Retro-Boost, your original idea! Why not? Well, somebody has to make one - and maintain it!

Oops, pretty in this case was used as the adjective : to a moderately high degree.  So to clarify my meaning there, Boost Union keeps things moderately close to core boost, but with the ability to customise.

Hi Rich,

About the links "Home Settings Participants Reports Question Bank More", you don't need to worry about them as they only show for admins.

If you want the blocks Calendar, Online users etc. on the Home page, you can turn editing on and add them. You'll then have a blocks drawer (which doesn't appear on pages with no blocks).

As you've found, the navigation drawer is gone in 4.2, as instead you have navigation along the top of each page (Home, Dashboard, My courses).

Rather than having your courses in the navigation drawer, there's a new My courses page where you can search, sort and filter courses. This is much easier for students with a long list of courses.

In courses, the navigation drawer is replaced by the course index which can be closed, or sections can be collapsed, to reduce cognitive load.

Otherwise, as others have mentioned, there are theme solutions available and also the navigation block.

Thanks all, Insoncerely appreciate everyone taking thebtime to reply! I'll have to tinker with Boost Union perhaps a bit when I have time! I tried a couple of different themes, but I dont have a lot of configuration time right mow. I'll definitely look more into Boost Union though.
