Is there a way to downgrade the version of mariadb server in the plesk panel of a VPS server?

Hi All,

I would like to install moodle 3.10 in the VPS windows server of GoDaddy hosting provider. I have completed the installation process but in the main page after I login I am getting the following error 'An error occurred whilst communicating with the server'. After some research I found that the mariadb version is not compatible. The requirement for mariadb is 10.5 but my current version is 10.6. Is there a way to downgrade the version? If not, can I delete the old version of mariadb and reinstall the required version? Will this by any means effect the plesk panel or anything? Can someone please assist me with this?

If this is not the correct solution then could you please suggest me one?

Thanks & Regards,

Soundarya

This isn't really a Moodle question - it's one for GoDaddy support.

I doubt that there's many people around here running MariaDB on Windows.

A VPS running Windows? Only GoDaddy would come with such a blunt idea. Ref. https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=193106#p840808.
big grin

GoDaddy or not, the under performance you observe https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=441941#p1777616 is no surprise.

After some research I found that the mariadb version is not compatible. The requirement for mariadb is 10.5 but my current version is 10.6. – What research did you do because that doesn't sound correct. There were some MariaDB 10.6 releases that caused a problem (10.6.0 to 10.6.6), so update to 10.6.7 or later if needed. But the release notes just say you must have MariaDB 10.2.29 or later.

That's what I assumed. There were problems with 10.6 but I must admit that I don't recall the exact issue. However, fair question smile

@all

Due to lack of evidence otherwise, I maintain that MariaDB 10.5 is the maximum version for Moodle since version 3.5 LTS. See http://www.syndrega.ch/blog/#php-and-dbms-compatibility-of-major-moodle-releases. I am open for corrections.

I gave up on it for Moodle some time ago (due to the above) so I've not really been following developments. Another possible solution - just use MySQL.

Perhaps the simple answer to your question is "no." A mariadb database expert might say "yes," if you know exactly what you are doing, know exactly what Moodle database structure is, etc. I suggest that you consider starting from scratch with Mariadb 10.5.x. Other folks here have provided good questions and help. The questions that I gather are:

Why a Windows server?
Why Plesk?
Why Moodle 3.10?
Why Mariadb 10.6?

Rick

In case you didn't notice the OP had an unexpected answer to the first two questions, "Why a Windows server? Why Plesk?". See https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=401983#p1778616.

Or, was it the expected answer?
