The best way I have ever found to understand how things are done in the workshop grading is to go and run the latest Quality Assurance tests for it. The ones for Moodle 4.0 can be found at, https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDLQA-16122, as sub-tasks 50 thru 59. In this case I think 57 and 58 are probably the ones that will help you the most in understanding the final workshop grades. Since these tests have been passed and include pictures, you don't really have to run the test yourself, unless you want to.
