Meaning of "restored" in mdl_user password field

Hello,

I had the task of upgrading a 5-year-old Moodle with a handful of courses on an outdated server. Decided to migrate the course information into a clean Moodle instead of stepping through all the updates across two servers. One question, though, is if the student passwords migrate across. In the mdl_user password field, they are listed as "restored" instead of a hash. Does this mean that they can use their old password, or do I need to post an announcement for people to reset their passwords?

Thanks,

Lynn

5 years ago ... what version of Moodle was that?

"migrate the course information into a clean Moodle" ... what does migrate mean?   Full course backups with users from old server restored to a what version moodle?

Hi Ken,
Yes, sorry, I performed a full course backup and restore for each course. The link you shared answered my question. I had hope it was otherwise based on this: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=112684 . I will just put an announcement for people to update their password.
Thanks,
Lynn

I've added some documentation on this issue and solution on the Backup and restore FAQ page.
